20th vs 21st Century Skills - Both Needed?

While it could be argued that there is still a need to teach 20th Century skills one wonders given the changes in technology and society what purpose they would actually serve. The modern world no longer requires people who can be put into a box to do a job like a cog in part of a larger machine. 21st century skills in comparison are focused on expanding horizons, solving problems and developing and refining understanding.
Therefore, other than certain basic fundamental skills that everyone should know, the need to learn highly regimented knowledge contained in delineated subject areas seems more and more obsolete.
